Frequently asked questions

What about nappy rash?

Your reusable nappies are no more likely to cause nappy rash than disposables. A recent survey by Bristol University into nappy rash concluded that the type of nappy worn did not emerge as a significant factor. Frequency of nappy changing is an important factor.

Do they leak?

It is important to select the right size for your baby's shape or if you have chosen our one-size nappies make sure that you have adjusted it to fit your baby. The outer wrap should fit snugly but not too tight as to leave a mark.

What tips can you suggest for reducing the environmental impact of real nappies?

- Wash nappies at 60oc and wraps at 40oc to 60oc do not boil wash
- Minimise tumble drying- line dry or use an airer
- Don't use fabric conditioner
- it is unnecessary and it reduces absorbency
- Use eco friendly washing powders
- Try potty training at around two years of age
- Use real nappies for more than one child
- Don't iron nappies

What do I do with soiled nappies?

If you are using a washable nappy liner, remove the majority of the poo into the toilet it can then be put in your nappy bucket with the rest of your nappies. If you are using flushable liners simply remover the liner and flush it down the toilet.

How do I store dirty nappies?

Washable nappies are stored in a lidded nappy bin. We recommend "dry-pailing" once the majority of the poo is removed simply put your nappies in your nappy bucket. You can add a few drops of tea tree oil or lavender oil to keep your bucket smelling fresh. A mesh bag will come in handy for easy transfer to the washing machine.

How do I wash my waterproof wraps?
Wraps do not have to be washed after every use. They should only need changing after 2-3 uses. Most wraps can be washed at 60oc.

How do I wash my wool wraps?
Baby BeeHinds wool covers and Sckoon merino wool nappy covers are both fully machine washable on a gentle cycle. Wool wraps require extra care. In order for your wool covers to perform its best, it needs to be 'lanolised'. Lanolin is the natural oil found in wool that helps to keep sheep dry in the rain. The wool needs to have this lanolin replenished every couple of weeks to maintain its leak proof abilities. The best product for this is 'Lansinoh' which is sold at chemists. Simply fill a bucket or sink with about 5cm of very hot water then add a pea sized amount of pure lanolin and mix to melt and disperse, once it has dispersed add enough cold water to make the water lukewarm then submerge your cover and leave to soak for around half an hour. Do not rinse it, just squeeze out the excess water by hand and then hang in the shade to dry. Wool covers only need washing every few weeks (providing they are not soiled and have been lanolised well enough). When you change your baby's nappy hang the wool cover to air dry until you next need to use it again. Its best to alternate between covers when using wool.

How do I dry my nappies?
We recommend drying your reusable nappies on the line or on an airier. If you want to keep your nappies really soft then when they are almost dry put them in the tumble dryer for a quick spin. Remember the sun is wonderful for bleaching out stains and sanitising your nappies. Make sure that your nappies are completely dry before you store them away.

What should I do with the nappies when I first receive them?
All reusable nappies should be washed before use to increase their absorbency. Please remember that you cannot return washed nappies.!
